Studies on the ex vivo survival of Lawsonia intracellularis
نویسنده
چکیده
Methods: Two co-cultured strains of L. intracellularis were suspended in vitro for 30 minutes at 20°C in various disinfectants according to label recommendations for usage, then washed in saline. Disinfectanttreated and Control bacteria were then added to fresh cells for co-culture for a standard 5-day incubation. Further cell-free suspensions were exposed to air at 5°C, 20°C, or 37°C for up to 8 days, then added to fresh cells for co-culture for a standard 5-day incubation. Lawsonia intracellularis within co-cultures were determined to be viable by visualization after indirect immunoperoxidase staining that incorporated specific monoclonal antibody. Groups of weaned pigs were inoculated orally with L. intracellularis-infected feces, either on the day the feces were collected, or after storage for 1, 2, or 5 weeks at temperatures between 5°C and 15°C.

Association between faecal load of lawsonia intracellularis and pathological findings of proliferative enteropathy in pigs with diarrhoea
BACKGROUND The study was designed to investigate correlation between histological findings of Lawsonia intracellularis in porcine cases of diarrhoea and the quantitative detection of Lawsonia intracellularis in faeces. A total of 156 pigs (10 to 70 days post weaning) with diarrhoea were randomly selected from 20 herds: The pigs were subjected to necropsy, histopathology, immunohistochemistry an...
متن کاملProliferative enteropathy: a global enteric disease of pigs caused by Lawsonia intracellularis.
Proliferative enteropathy (PE; ileitis) is a common intestinal disease affecting susceptible pigs raised under various management systems around the world. Major developments in the understanding of PE and its causative agent, Lawsonia intracellularis, have occurred that have led to advances in the detection of this disease and methods to control and prevent it. Diagnostic tools that have impro...
متن کاملLsaA, an antigen involved in cell attachment and invasion, is expressed by Lawsonia intracellularis during infection in vitro and in vivo.
Lawsonia intracellularis has been identified recently as the etiological agent of proliferative enteropathies, which are characterized by intestinal epithelial hyperplasia and associated moderate immune responses. This disease complex has been reported in a broad range of animals, prevalently in pigs, and L. intracellularis has been linked with ulcerative colitis in humans. L. intracellularis i...
متن کاملReport of Lawsonia intracellularis Infection in Dogs by Polymerase Chain Reaction
The purpose of this study was to survey Lawsonia intracellularis in dogs in Thailand by using Polymerase chain reaction technique. Lawsonia intracellularis is obligatory intracellular bacterium which causes proliferative enteropathy in animals, including dog. Fecal samples from 48 dogs were collected from Bangkok, Pathumthani and Nakhon Ratchasima and tested for L. intracellularis by PCR techni...
متن کاملLawsonia Intracellularis: A Constant Challenge to Modern Swine Production
Lawsonia intracellularis (LI) is an obligate intracellular proteobacteria that causes porcine proliferative enteritis. The disease affects mainly piglets and has an important role in economic losses in the swine breeding chain, chiefly because it is usually hardly noticed swine herds. Being a disease with cosmopolitan distribution it triggers reduction in average daily gain of weight and feed c...
